Volunteers have been serving Mercy Medical Center since 1920 when the first hospital guild was organized with 40 members. The guild sponsored dances to raise funds to purchase hospital equipment. They also made gowns for patients, mended garments, and canned fruit as well as performed a variety of services for the hospital. The volunteer organization became known as the Auxiliary in the 1950's per recommendations of the National Hospital Association.
When the present Mercy Medical Center was built in the 1960’s, the Auxiliary shared in the development of the new facility, and their duties continued to grow. With each further expansion of the hospital, the Auxiliary assumed new responsibilities -- maintaining throughout, its’ spirit of service.
In addition to the hands-on work for the hospital, the Auxiliary has raised close to a half-million dollars for equipment and special supplies for Mercy Medical Center. Volunteers donate close to 30,000 hours to Mercy each year.
