Idaho Healthcare Associated Infection (HAI) Prevention Plan Implementation Project

In late 2009, the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, Office of Epidemiology, Food Protection and Immunizations received funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to develop a statewide plan for the prevention of healthcare associated infections. An objective in the plan included recruiting Idaho hospitals to report several metrics to the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN), a web-based tool offered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Two metrics were chosen for the plan based on meetings and surveys involving stakeholders and hospitals throughout Idaho. Metrics chosen to be reported to NHSN are:

  • Laboratory identified Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bloodstream infections. (MRSA 2 BSI)
  • Deep incision, organ and space infections from cholecystectomy/cholecystotomy and/or hip prosthesis procedures. (CHOL, HPRO)
Idaho Hospital Association (IHA) is encouraging participation by hospitals for this important project and will help hospitals obtain NHSN access as well as provide technical support and training. Complete information on reporting HAI to NHSN can be found at www.cdc.gov/nhsn.

The Idaho Hospital Association (IHA) is currently functioning as a Group Administrator for Idaho's NHSN reporting. Facilities may choose to join IHA's group and may limit information that can be viewed.
