Health Reform, Integrated Systems, and the Medical Staff
September 20, 2010 - 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. MT
90 Minutes with Live Questions and Answers
Market pressures, health reform, and other forces are driving individual hospitals to join with other players in a bewildering variety of so-called 'integrated systems.' How does the role of the 'Medical Staff Office'--need to evolve to keep pace with these developments? What are some of the challenges that arise when multiple hospitals need to coordinate credentialing and privileging? What about the quality of physicians' work outside the boundaries of the hospital? How are leading hospitals addressing these and other problems, as they evolve into 'accountable care organizations' and other forms of clinically integrated systems? Join Jamie Orlikoff and Jim Reinertsen for a frank and practical conversation about these difficult topics.

In the Government's Cross Hairs: Fraud and Abuse in the Era of Health Reform
October 18, 2010 - 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. MT
90 Minutes with Live Questions and Answers
There is one health reform issue on which politicians of every stripe agree: eliminate the waste, fraud and abuse that are rampant in the system. And there are significant new provisions under health reform that strengthen the hand of enforcement. The enforcers have made it abundantly clear that they will rely on these laws to save and recover public funds. Still further, the law gives significant new opportunities to whistleblowers to bring cases. What are the implications for boards and leadership of health care delivery systems? What questions should you be asking to make sure that you aren't a future 'headline' on the fraud front? What practical steps can you take to protect yourselves? Join ORBoardworks for this web seminar led by Alice G. Gosfield, JD, one of the top 25 health lawyers in the country, as we examine some of the difficult fraud and abuse issues that face all health care providers. She will provide lively, understandable and practical guidance.

Understanding the Fiduciary Role of the Board
November 22, 2010 - 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. MT
90 Minutes with Live Questions and Answers
The term 'fiduciary duty of the board' is frequently used, and often times incorrectly. Yet, ever-growing scrutiny and accountability of the board has heightened the critical importance of clearly understanding and fulfilling the board's fiduciary duties and responsibilities. This is especially true as the challenges and implications of health reform impact governance. This webinar will review the fiduciary responsibilities of the Board of a nonprofit healthcare organization and clearly outline what they mean for the board and the board member. This webinar is appropriate as an orientation for newer board members and medical staff leaders, as well as a refresher for experienced board members. Join Jamie Orlikoff for a clear and understandable explanation of the duties and obligations of the board.

DVD Series on the Board's Role in Quality and Patient Safety
In this challenging economic climate, it is crucial to find an affordable way to educate the Board on how to oversee the quality and safety clinical care -- the core work of health care. This newly released DVD set, The Summit Series: The Board's Role in Quality and Patient Safety is the answer -- for healthcare organizations of every size and type.
In a meticulously crafted set of 12 programs, governance and quality experts Jamie Orlikoff and Jim Reinertsen provide a superb resource to quickly impove the understanding and capability of the entire board, orient new board members, develop and improve the quality committee, and even "certify" the learning and growth of trustees -- whether your board oversees a critical access hospital, a major regional system, or a complex academic health center. The Board's Role in Quality and Patient Safety is also extremely helpful for medical staff leaders, particularly in their interaction with the board over quality of care issues.
The 12 programs are flexibly structured in 20-30 minute segments, with written guides for reflection and discussion, so that board members and other leaders can use these DVDs to learn:
- during education sessions at board meetings
- during committee meetings as a regular part of the agenda
- in board retreats and other group activities
- as individuals at home on their own time
The programs are divided into three sections to help board members:
- See the Problem.
- Own the Problem.
- Solve the Problem.
Affordable and critical education for your board; at your own location and at your convenience!
